Field Trip Overview

            As required on our Field Trip and Seminars subject, we chose to have a major and minor field trip with an interpersonal skill activity. Our minor field trip took place at the PSCC or Public Safety Command Center in Davao City.

            We decided to visit the center on August 25, 2012. On the day of the visitation, we arrived very early so we waited at the shed near the 911 center. Our tour and meeting with the head of the command center was 9:00 in the morning and because of excitement, I think we were very early enough to be at the venue. Upon waiting at the 911 center, we witnessed how abrupt and prepared the 911 men were. There was an alarm and they jumped on the trucks immediately. I was very amazed of how dedicated they were in their duties.

            When we entered the building of the PSCC, we headed straight to their war room. We were welcomed by Mr. Magno Adalin. He presented to us the vision and mission of PSCC in serving the people of Davao City. On the presentation was Mayor Sara Duterte interviewed on a conference in Manila. The presentation was composed of the goals and plans of the department in order to protect the people in Davao and give us the safest place to live in.

Today, I went to company visit to…

            As our minor field trip, we went to PSCC or Public Safety Command Center in Ecoland, Davao City.

What I Learned?

            PSCC or PSSCC aims to be the nerve center that unifies and further coordinates different government agencies like the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the City Health Office and City Social Services and Development Office, the Central 911, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Red Cross, the Davao City Disaster Coordinating Council, Office of the Civil Defense and the Regional Disasters Coordinating Council. According to Mayor Sara Duterte, “Davao City aims to be a smart city.” Yes. I myself can witness how Davao City is on the process of growing as a smart city with all the incoming investors and settled investors in the city.

            After watching the presentation, Mr. Magno entertained some questions such as will they have a mobile application like MMDA that will help the people to access the traffic monitoring of the center in order to have a better look of alternative routes in traffic situations. Mr. Magno said that they are open with the idea and they are looking forward with partnering with the University of Southeastern Philippines.

What I Liked?

            What definitely amazed us was their traffic monitoring system/room. They have huge screens connected to the CCTV cameras that were scattered in the intersections of the city. We also had the chance to see some clips of incidents that happened in the different streets of Davao City. Some were very tragic and helpless. I learned that their CCTV cameras were situated only in the intersecting roads of the city. Their cameras can zoom up to 35 times and are rotatable 360°. Their CCTV cameras not only serve as a monitoring tool for the traffic but also a way to protect the citizens and traffic men that are on duty. With the monitoring system, unjust acts, violations, and suspicious activities were prevented.
            The day ended with answered questions and satisfaction.

What I didn’t like?

            There was nothing I didn’t like. Amazement is the only word that describes what I experienced the entire trip.

Recommendation

            Our trip at the PSCC brought in so much knowledge and information about the protection that the government of Davao is doing. As our minor field trip, I was very satisfied with the company that we visited. So much learning sunk in my mind and I know someday, I will be able to use this knowledge in order to continue the service that our local government is lending our people. I recommend that you try to visit companies that are using technology as a solution to the city’s needs. Then you will be able to know how to use your skill to help others.

Field Trip Overview
           
            The Field Trip and Seminars, which happened on the 10th – 14th of September 2012, were learning experiences that we acquired outside of the classroom. This subject provided the students with an opportunity to see the actual places where Information Technology is a great contributor.  It enriched our experiences through exposing us to situations and places that are new to us. The field trip and seminars allowed the students to gain firsthand knowledge regarding our major.

            In accordance with our curriculum, the students of Field Trip and Seminars are required to go on an educational tour and undergo seminars that will help the students acquire information and knowledge that are not served on the four corners of our classroom. The school offered us options that we may take in order to perform the field trip and seminars. Among the three choices/models, we chose Model A which provided us with a Major Field Trip, a Minor Field Trip, and an Interpersonal Activity. Our Interpersonal Activity took place at the Social Hall of the university. We had our Minor Field Trip at the PSSCC or Public Safety Security Command Center located at Ecoland, Davao City. And for the grand part, Metro Manila was our destination for the Major Field Trip.

            To help us with the bookings, company visitation, and accommodation on our trip in Manila, the Maynilad Tours & Educational Services Inc. extended their hands in providing us with an effective itinerary that will let us achieve the learning objectives of the subject. Together with our advisers, Sir Randy Gamboa and Sir Roy Manceras, they came up with an itinerary that was affordable yet filled with knowledge ahead. The agency was successful enough in giving us the most comfortable stay, great company visits, unforgettable side trips, and a fun-filled experience.

            A lot were first times and these first times were the best. Aside from the headaches, colds and cough due to the change of climate, the rest was great. We stayed at the Kabayan Hotel located at 2878 Zamora Street corner EDSA Rotonda, Pasay City. The accommodation was good and comfy except that the dorm-type rooms were like hospital rooms. The food was great and the facilities were relaxing. The hotel staffs were accommodating and friendly. The hotel is located in front of the MRT Station which makes it very convenient and accessible. The venues on the whole trip were safe, comfortable, and equipped with sufficient facilities. Thanks to the Maynilad staff for giving us a great experience. There was no wasted time even though the sites were far. We have enough time to appreciate what the places have to offer. We appreciate the efforts of the tour guides, especially the one assigned on our bus which is Kuya Byron. He fed our minds with lots of information regarding the places in Manila, their origins and all. He was very accommodating and welcoming. Boredom was not an issue on our batch because of the lively tour guides. One word that would best describe the field trip was AMAZING.


DAY 1
           
Today, I went to company visit to…

            Upon arrival at the NAIA, we were divided into two; big bus and small bus, and headed straight to the Department of Science and Technology – Science & Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII). We were welcomed by Sir Toti Carandang, the division chief. Later that afternoon, we visited MMDA Traffic Engineering headed by Sir Mabbagu, CCTV Team Leader, and Engr. Jun Bautista.

What I Learned?

            STII or Science & Technology Information Institute is the information and marketing arm of the DOST System and the leading storehouse of science and technology information and data. Sir Raymond E. Liboro as the STII Director and assisted by Mario G. Montejo, secretary. They have 17 regional offices. In Davao, DOST is headed by Dr. Anthony Sales, Regional Director XI. Sir Toti presented the High Impact Technology Solutions or HITS. It is the DOST’s blueprint for success. Some of the technology solutions that they developed with the contribution of the different branches of the society are Hybrid Monitoring Weather Station, Meteorological Buoy, Stabilized Brown Rice, Iron Fortified Rice, Complementary Food Blends, Water Retort, Vacuum Packaging Machine, Immersion Freezer, Vacuum Frying, Spray Dryer, Ceramic Pot-Type Water Filter, Oil Trap, Water Hyacinth Harvester, and Automated Guideway Transit System. DOST-STII’s mission is to establish and maintain a science and technology databank and library through their Science.ph website, disseminate science and technology information, and undertake training on information science and technology training.

Another presentation was by Sir Lloyd Mandapat differentiating IPV4, IPV5, IPV6, and their developments on the Project NOAH. According to Sir Lloyd, the Internet Protocol v.6 is better than IPv4 for IPv6 has 128 bit addressing scheme and 3.4x10138 possible combinations. He also stated that it has a nice security of network and is hard to hack. IPv4 has only 32 bit addressing scheme and 4.3 billion possible combinations. The reason why IPv5 is not known is because it was discontinued and was too expensive. They are also proud to introduce not just their website but a site for everybody especially the Filipinos which is the Science.ph. The site has a Philippine Standard Time and is a house of information and resources regarding science. This site is linked to the different known or unknown sites that may contain information that a user wants to know. They are offering a wide variety of knowledge that is surrounding the country.

Lastly, is their response to President Aquino’s call for Filipinos which is the Project NOAH or National Disaster Assessment of Hazards. The project harness technologies and management services for disaster risk reduction activities offered by DOST through PAGASA, PHIVOLCS, and the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) in partnership with the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences and the UP College of Engineering. It is my first time to see the actual site of the project. There’s weather forecasting, rain meter, and flood monitoring. This NOAH doesn’t need to build an ark to save the Filipinos from floods. All it needs is for people to access its website, noah.dost.gov.ph.

On our visit at the Traffic Engineering of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), we were welcomed by CCTV Team Leader, Sir Mabbagu. I was very amazed with their monitoring center. They not only monitor the streets of Metro Manila but also the flood control of the region. Metropolitan Manila which is the political, economical, and social center if the Philippines that covers an area of 634 km2, composed of 17 cities, is protected by MMDA. One of the duties of MMDA is the transport and traffic management, which include the formulation, coordination, and monitoring of policies, standards, programs and projects to rationalize the existing transport operations, infrastructure requirements, the use of thoroughfares, and promotion of safe and convenient movement of persons and goods; administration and implementation of all the traffic enforcement operations, traffic engineering services and traffic education programs, including the institution of a single ticketing system in Metropolitan Manila. They also presented their flood control structure which is composed of open gateways, drainage main, outfalls, and interceptions, and drainage laterals. They have also open waterways like creeks, esteros, rivers, and channel or open canal according to Engr. Jun Bautista, Disaster Risk Management Operation Center Head.

What I Liked?

What I like is that MMDA is proud to say that they use WiMAX or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access in their CCTVs. Their cameras can zoom almost a kilometer and their database has a storage capacity of 24 terrabytes. We saw some accident videos captured by their CCTVs along the roads. It is so amazing to see how they monitor traffic and flood, their services for our countrymen and how they extend their efforts and time just to protect the Filipinos. What I didn’t like?

            With all the knowledge that I have acquired during our visit with the two companies, there was nothing for me to be disappointed. I saw how they formulated and developed projects and services for the country. It was our pleasure to meet them and let us judge ourselves how they do their work.



DAY 2

Today, I went to company visit to…

            On the 2nd day of our trip, we attended the Philippines Youth Congress Information Technology (Y4IT) Seminar held at the University of the Philippines (UP Diliman Campus). With the theme “IT is Power: Celebrating a Decade of Transforming Lives,” the 10th Y4IT continued to serve as a meeting place for the best minds in IT, while giving participants a rare chance to know the latest IT breakthroughs, establish a network of contacts, and see how the field looks like.

What I Learned?

            When we arrived at the university, I am surprised with the crowd of IT students that attended the seminar. They are from all over the country including us. Because of the great number of students arrived, the seminar was held in 3 venues, at the UP Theatre, UP Bahay ng Alumni, and UP Film Institute. In the morning, we were accommodated at the UP Bahay ng Alumni because UP Theatre was already crowded. I am proud to say that our adviser, Sir Randy Gamboa did the Opening Address. Some of the presentations were about the Development and Trends in the Art of Animation and Marketing Made Easy. We watched a short animated film by Niko Salazar entitled “Marianing.” The animated film was about a mythical creature slayer. I really love the effects and transitions of every scene specially the audio. It brought me goose bumps. Sir Bejamin Marasigan presented early forms of animation and the latest trend of animation, from paper and pencils to computer workstations. Some of the early animation toys were Praxinoscope and Tomata. The early projector was invented by Emil Reynaud and the combination of Film and Projector was by Thomas Edison. The early animation was by James Stuart Blacktom which is the “Humurous Phases of Funny Faces.” In the early 1900s, they animators use black ink and paper which produced the film Gertie the Dinosaur by Windsor McCay. Then Cel Animation was developed. Cel animation uses celluloid. They separate characters form background and is still black and white. Back then, it was still hand painted and were silent movies like Felix the Cat by Otto Messmer. After the development of the Cel Animation, comes the development of Talkies and Colored Cartoons from Silent Cartoons. In the 1960s – 1990s, Xerox Photocopying Technology was formed. An example was the 101 Dalmatians (1961). Then came traditional 2D and CGI which uses hand-drawn animation and Maya, 3DMax software. In the mid 1990s, 3D CGI Animation was developed which lead to the seamless integration of traditional 2D and 3D CGI animation in live action. This explains how animation was formed to bring better entertainment to the viewers.

In the afternoon, we transferred at the UP Theatre and interesting speakers presented interesting topics and innovations. First was Ms. Samantha Jade Sadural over SPREAD which is a thesis about speech defects. One thing that Ms. Samantha emphasized are the 3 characteristics that one must have in order to survive life. “Talas ng Isip, Tibay ng Dibdib, at Kapal ng Mukha.” Another was the Importance of Feedback Loop by Alvin Chan, and lastly was Mr. Joseph Desmond Cruel, a post-production consultant of ABS-CBN on Information Technology in Today’s Digital Filmmaking and Media Content Production. Mr. Joseph discussed how they work in their industry. I was amazed with how they turn old films to aided films, enhancing the color, removing scratches, slices and all. The seminar ended with POINTWEST and Tech Talk.

What I Liked?

            Overall, I was very satisfied with the information that I gained during the seminar. A lot of interesting topics were discussed. What I like the most was the animated film “Marianing” we watched at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. I wonder if someday, I can make a film just like that. But I doubt. Animation is not my forte. I also liked the presentation of Sir Joseph from ABS-CBN. Our local films are the treasures of our local film industry. And giving them importance by aiding them for better viewing is a help for the film archive of the country.

What I didn’t like?

            What I didn’t like was the presentation of Feedback Loop. Maybe because there was no presentation, just speech. I did not understand anything either. What I also did not like were the masters of the ceremony. They were not effective enough to make the crowd alive. I can’t hardly hear the male emcee though they were trying their best to make the crowd be responsive.



DAY 3

Today, I went to company visit to…

            We started our day at the PLDT InnoLab in Mandaluyong City. Our visit time was 9 am and we arrived very early so we waited at the bus for an hour. In the afternoon, we headed to SSS or Social Security System in East Ave. Quezon City.

What I Learned?

InnoLab stands for Innovation Laboratory & Telecommunications Education of PLDT. We were welcomed by Ms. Annie Ferrer. InnoLab focuses on research and product development. There are 3 principal business groups which is composed of the Fixed Line for residential and business line, Wireless, and Data which is the information and communication technology. PLDT was born in the year 1928-1938. They had 28,579 total lines, 927 employees. In this year, telephone operators were in-demand. In the year 1938-1948 (Age of Destruction), US Forces was in destruction which caused 10,848 lines to be available and 315 employees to be working. In this year, rotary phones were invented. In the year 1949-1958 (Age of Hope), PLDT started seeing hope. PLDT installed underground telephone cables in the year 1953. In the year 1949, they had their annual report and had 60,066 total lines with1304 employees. In the year1959-1968 (Age of Change), computer mouse was nicknamed “the mouse.” PLDT installed microwave system and has 184,782 total lines with 3,028 employees. In the year 1969-1978 (Age of Control), PLDT had 496,266 total lines with 6,716 employees. PLDT focused on providing the power of control. In the year 1979-1988 (Age of Revolution), EDSA People Power ended. PLDT had 1,926,066 total lines with 14,856 employees. In 1989-1998 (Age of GateKeeper), PLDT announced the first single chip microprocessor. They already had 1,596,856 total lines with 15,078 employees. In the year 1999-2008 (Age of Transformation), “Triple Play” services debuted. They had 1,782,356 total lines with 29,904(fixed line, wireless, ICT) employees. It was also the year for Smart Bro plug-in device and PLDT IP Phone. In the year 2009 and beyond (Age of Fast Forward), PLDT shifted its network to IP, broadband enabled the delivery of richer multimedia control and services. I also learned some topics about telecommunications which was already discussed on our past subject in early college. Such as the early forms of communications and the modern forms of communication.

            In the afternoon company visit, SSS or Social Security System tackled about the benefits that our fellowmen may get on being a member of SSS. This agency provides retirement and health benefits to all enrolled employees in the Philippines. Members can also make salary or calamity loans. Salary loans depend on the monthly salary of the employee while calamity loans are for such times when there is a calamity that has been so declared by the government. They also taught us how apply for the benefits, what to fill up, and how to enjoy them.

            I also learned that SSS cannot track students that are working for companies abroad despite of the mandatory action that all must apply for a membership at the SSS. I am an SSS member but it was cut off because I continued my studies and I don’t have any income for now. I would like to continue the benefits that SSS offers and with the steps that they handed in order for us to renew our membership, I may be able to go to our local agency and reapply.

What I Liked?

            After the discussion at the InnoLab, we had a chance to listen to the presentation of the ACER men. They let us take a look with their latest model of notebooks which is very amazing because of its exterior and durability. The car passing the notebook laid on the road with being damaged was very stunning. Even our advisers tried to step and jump on the notebook to test its durability; still it is very all right. PLDT brought so much information. I love how they presented their innovations.

What I didn’t like?

            In the question and answer portion of the seminar, the SSS employees lacked information about technologies that they applied and how technology helped them in their service to the Filipinos. They were not able to have a representative in their IT department so that they can explain some of the questions that were served.



DAY 4

Today, I went to company visit to…

            Today, we had only one company visit. Early in the morning, we headed for SPi Global in Parañaque City.

What I Learned?

            SPi Global is a Philippine-based diversified knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and is one of the largest and most diversified Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) service providers in terms of clients, geographic presence, and capabilities.

            SPi Global provided with a presentation about their company which brings domain expertise in the Customer Interaction, Healthcare, and Publishing markets. SPi Global offers business outsourcing solutions in industries such as: publishing, healthcare, financial services, entertainment and media, government and utilities, retail, and telecommunications. It functions in outsourcing call centers customer care, customer service (voice and non-voice), help desk support, content conversion, coding, database structuring and support, transaction processing, medical transcription, billing, and revenue cycle management, and coding and billing compliance. I learned what type of networking they deal with, how they produce solutions such as for pay-roll system. The presentation was somewhat like the PLDT InnoLab seminar. So much information was handed. We also took a look at their working place. We saw how they convert published books, printed magazines, and newspapers to a digital format. They help publishers make the transition to an e-first operation and convert or produce articles and titles in an ePublishing environment, by creating multimedia for enhanced eBooks, and developing content for mobile devices, from smart phones to iPads. We saw how they convert millions of pages of content from hard copy, digital, microfilm, or microfiche formats. 

What I Liked?

            What I really liked was the chance to see their workstations. We had a tour on the vicinity of the company. We saw the software that they use, their call center, and the entire building. I learned that when editing pictures, you must have a dim surrounding in order to see the colors more.

What I didn’t like?

            Actually, there’s nothing that I did not like. The opportunity to visit their company and know their secrets was a great help.



DAY 5

Today, I went to company visit to…

            The last company that we visited was the J.P Morgan Chase & Co. at Bonifacio Global, Taguig. This was the most amazing company that we visited in the entire trip.

What I Learned?

            JP Morgan Chase & Co. is an American multinational banking corporation of securities, investments and retail. With this, you’ll be able to tell that this is a prestigious company. Upon arriving at the company, we handed our bags and was laid on the x-ray machine. There was also a free vending machine which was enjoyed by most of us. Their building was huge. Upon entering, you will feel like you were in another world. Their facilities were very amazing. It was like a comfortable home for the employees. They have strict rules. We were welcomed by Miss Coco. We took a tour at the building. Unfortunately, we were not able to go to their war room because it was occupied. It is where they hold their meetings and big screens were hanged around. They communicate virtually and were like on a star wars conference. Their elevators are 2 way. It was actually my first time to see a 2 way elevator. We had our seminar at a hall near their cafeteria.

JP Morgan Chase & Co. is the largest bank in the United States by assets. It is a major provider of financial services, with assets of $2 trillion and according to Forbes magazine is the world’s second largest public company based on composite ranking. The company’s founder was Mr. J.P Morgan. He was actually the model for the much known Monopoly Board Game. Their company was built with hard work over 200 years. It was built on the foundation of more than 1200 predecessor institutions. One thing that caught my attention was that they were the ones behind the tellers in the bank. Now I know that every transaction does not end on the teller’s counter. JP Morgan Chase in the Philippines processes every transaction after the client in the United States reaches the bank’s teller. JP Morgan Chase also helps different companies with their financial problems and how to cope with situations that may get them to lose their company. They suggests alternative solutions, merging, selling, and even uses advertising to aid the problems of different companies in the Philippines and even abroad. Honestly, it was my first time to hear JP Morgan Chase & Co. But I must say that they did a great job in keeping humble yet growing their company to be a better solution for the people.

What I Liked?

            So far, among the companies that we visited, JP Morgan was the most fascinating company we visited. Aside from the hospitality of their staffs, their free vending machine, and their stunning workplace, I like how they protect, take care, and compensate their employees. Salary is a big consideration on why you’ll love to work at the JP Morgan Chase & Co. I also like how they give chance to their employees to be knowledgeable in the banking system, and cater mobility for employees to explore different work streams within the company.

What I didn’t like?

            I have nothing much to say about the company. Great place to work, great salary, good working environment, competitive pay, values diversity and customer experience, you can’t actually think of anything else that will disappoint you with the company.   



Recommendation

            The Field Trip and Seminars which is part of the curriculum of the Information Technology is a looked-forward event for the students. We, the 3rd batch under this subject chose to have a major and a minor field trip including an interpersonal skill activity before the trip. We had a 5-day company visitation of the different ICT companies in Metro Manila. A major field trip which is commonly held outside the region is a great opportunity to involve yourselves and see in your own eyes how IT and CS work after graduation. To be able to enjoy and gain lots of information during the educational activity, make sure that you are prepared, open-minded, and ready to fill your minds with new ideas and technologies that will lead you sooner or later in helping develop our country.

            The learning that you acquire inside the four corners of the classroom is just a half of what you need to know in order to be a successful and effective ICT employee in the near future. The trip will widen your imagination and will let you think outside of the box. Information imparted by the employees and companies themselves will amaze you of what is in store for you outside the university. Prepare yourselves to be fascinated and stunned of how ICT companies grew and created innovations to serve the community.
